Comparisons of Inequality

Comparisons of inequality are used to show that one thing is more or less than another.

More...Than (Más... Que)

To say that something is more than another thing:

  • Más + adjective/adverb/noun + que
  • Example: Ella es más alta que su hermana. - She is taller than her sister.

Less...Than (Menos... Que)

To say that something is less than another thing:

  • Menos + adjective/adverb/noun + que
  • Example: Este coche es menos caro que aquel. - This car is less expensive than that one.

Comparisons of Equality

Comparisons of equality are used to show that two things are the same in some way.

As...As (Tan... Como)

To say that something is as... as another thing (used with adjectives and adverbs):

  • Tan + adjective/adverb + como
  • Example: Ella es tan inteligente como él. - She is as intelligent as he is.

As Much/Many...As (Tanto/a/os/as... Como)

To say that there is as much/many of something as another (used with nouns):

  • Tanto/a/os/as + noun + como
  • Example: Tengo tanto dinero como tú. - I have as much money as you.



Superlatives

Superlatives are used to express the highest or lowest degree of a quality.

The Most... (El/La/Los/Las Más...)

To say that something has the most of a quality:

  • El/La/Los/Las + más + adjective + de
  • Example: Ella es la más inteligente de la clase. - She is the most intelligent in the class.

The Least... (El/La/Los/Las Menos...)

To say that something has the least of a quality:

  • El/La/Los/Las + menos + adjective + de
  • Example: Este es el menos caro de todos. - This is the least expensive of all.

Irregular Comparatives and Superlatives

Some adjectives have irregular comparative and superlative forms.

  • Bueno (good) → Mejor (better) → El mejor (the best)
  • Example: Este libro es mejor que el otro. - This book is better than the other.
  • Malo (bad) → Peor (worse) → El peor (the worst)
  • Example: Esta película es peor que la otra. - This movie is worse than the other.
  • Grande (big) → Mayor (bigger/older) → El mayor (the biggest/oldest)
